Booking Before You Pack

People who live together book things late. They can: the evening is available, the city is outside the door, and a change of mind costs nothing. People who live in two countries cannot behave that way about anything, and the evening in the room is no exception. It gets arranged in the same wave as the seats and the room, weeks out, and that turns out to suit everyone.

Reason one: the roster narrows

Twenty-three therapists work with the house. The number free on a named Friday eight weeks from now is much larger than the number free on that Friday at seven in the evening, and the difference is not a matter of policy. Each of these women decides her own hours and which bookings she takes.

So a message written early is the difference between the person the two of you agreed on and whoever happens to be free. If the two of you have spent a week looking at the roster in a chat and settled on a name, that week was an investment, and leaving the booking until the trip starts spends it for nothing.

Reason two: two people deciding need days

An arrangement between two people separated by a time difference does not get made in an exchange of messages over twenty minutes. It gets made over several ordinary conversations: one of you raises it, the other thinks about it overnight, a name comes up, the format is argued about mildly, a length is agreed.

Compress that into the night itself and it becomes a negotiation conducted while tired, in a room, with a clock running. The couples who describe the evening afterwards as the part of the trip that worked are almost always the couples who had finished deciding before either of them reached an airport.

Reason three: the money behaves better early

Half the fee confirms a booking made more than twenty-four hours before it starts, which covers everything arranged before a trip. It is not a holding sum set aside somewhere; it is the first half of the fee, named in writing once the hour is agreed, settled before she sets out, with the balance handed over at the door.

What makes early booking comfortable is what happens if the plan changes, which for long-distance couples it regularly does. More than a day's notice and the whole deposit comes back. Or the date moves once, free, with the deposit travelling across whole, as long as the new date falls inside fourteen days. Booking early does not lock you in nearly as hard as people imagine, and the deposit page sets out every step of the scale.

What to send in the first message

Both dates you are in the city rather than one, because flexibility across two evenings produces a much better answer. The later of the two arrival times, with the zone stated. The format, meaning one therapist for the two of you or a therapist each. A length. Two or three names, or a description if you have not settled on names. The district, even if the room is not booked. And the line saying both of you know about the booking and want it.

What is not needed yet: the room number. It arrives on the day and everybody expects it to.

The half, length by length

Ninety minutes for the two of you with one therapist goes ahead on a deposit of half its fee, and two hours does the same. Ninety minutes or two hours with a therapist each works identically, only on the doubled sum. The eight hour block for two with one therapist is split down the middle too, and its first half is settled before she sets out.

Card to begin with, and Revolut, Wise or cryptocurrency for anyone who would sooner use one of those. PayPal and bank transfer are not among the routes. The quiet weeks in between

Between the confirmation and the travel day the thread goes silent, sometimes for over a month, and people occasionally read that as a problem. It is not. The arrangement is written down: the date, the hour, the length, the format, the figure and the half already settled.

The next thing that needs to happen is the address, and that happens on the day. If anything changes before then, write; otherwise there is nothing to do but pack, which on this kind of trip is the easiest part of the whole enterprise.
